Constructed in 1755 as a supply depot and staging area for the British campaigns against the French to North, Fort Edward and the adjacent Rogers' Island was at one time the third largest "city" in North America, with 15,000-16,000 British and provincial soldiers and officers present here. Fort Edward is currently located in a residential neighborhood and situated under about a dozen houses. In 1995 and 1996 sustained professional archaeology was conducted for the first time by Dr. David Starbuck and his field supervisors and crews. I led the search for the westernmost sections of the fort, including the curtain wall along the river with sallyport (emergency escape exit) and the western barracks.
In the near future I hope to present you with the results and photographs of my crew's findings.
