In 1992 the first professional archaeology commenced at one of the nation's premier French and Indian War sites, the 40+acre island in the Hudson River known as Rogers' Island. Named for the famed guerrilla scout who led daring raids against French positions and strongholds, the island was at its peak home to thousands of colonial and British soldiers. It contained two story barracks, brick kilns, bread ovens, Rangers' huts, gardens, and hospitals, including a smallpox hospital my crew discovered in the 1994, to date the only smallpox hospital from this era found in North America.
